What is Accessibility of an App?

In general accessibility of apps means an application that is easily accessible by disabled people comfortably by understanding it’s features.

Accessibility is most important in developing the whole application designing as it increases the potential of accessing the apps. However, it is imperative to enhance simplicity while designing the app to access it perfectly.

Accessibility app can be used by all users regardless of age, gender, education, ability, etc.

Also, includes that it has proper customer validation & has a good user experience.

Designing the app with excellent accessibility should not be for finite users only.

Impending Accessible Apps

By seeing the app one can immediately tell that it is accessible or not.

The color combination, font size, background and foreground color, contrast, etc. play a very vital role in defining the accessibility of the application.

Example:Xaml:

using Xamarin.Forms;
namespace Blog
{
    public partial class MainPage : ContentPage
    {
        public MainPage()
        {
            InitializeComponent();
            var list = new List
            {
                "Hii",
                "This is Carousel View",
                "In Xamarin.Froms",
                "Thanks!!!"
            };
            TheCarousel.ItemsSource = list;
        }
    }
}
OUTPUT:

Image: Non-Accessible App

In the given example, there is nothing visible and understandable, it’s because of the color combination and the font size of the content placed in the application.

So I did some changes in the font color, background color, size of the text, also added a border around the carousel view to highlight it.

After Changes: Xaml:

No changes in the CS file.

OUTPUT:

Image: Accessible App

After doing all the changes in the app, now it’s able to notice the content and go in ease to all the contents of it.

In the carousel view, we can add some images also to make it attractive for the consumers.

Points to keep in mind while developing App

Facts say that over 15% (around 1 billion people) of the world are suffering from some or the other disability. Therefore, if we are not developing apps that are fully accessible, we will not get closer to the world’s large population.

Some good and experimental practices should be kept in mind while designing an accessible app. They are:

1.Creating Visible Content

When the app is being built, we have to take care that the content written and displayed in the app is being perfectly readable and noticeable by the users.

The color contrast plays a very large role in the accessibility of the whole content.

The links and the important content that should firstly be noticed by the users and must be highlighted or given some special font effects to catch users’ attention.

2.Support large size of content

We must use layouts that can house the resizing of the font. Hardcoding the dimension of any control leads to a large number of lines of code in the app.

3.Navigation must be good and understandable

Navigation is the main part of any application or website, so if it’s not coded in a nice way the users or the clients will not be able to acknowledge where they are and where to go for acquiring some information they want.

Therefore, the developer at the time of designing the app or website or web app must keep in mind that the navigation should be proper so that it does not affect the reader’s utilization.

4.Image and Icons

All the images attached in the app or the website must be given the figure caption so that the reader comes to know that what the figure is related to.

Icons are the most attractive as well as an active part of the Application User Interface. So it must be placed in such a way that it’s auto-comprehensive and eye-catching.

5.All platform Supportive

The highly accessible app or site works perfectly in all browsers and all types of devices.

Also in the new technologies, one new feature is added that is Screen Reading. If any application or site supports that it will be very beneficial to the users as well as the owners and the developers of the application.

Conclusion

In this blog, we have learned Accessible apps and understood it practically. Looking at these aspects, we can conclude that an Application or any Website is accessible only if the content inside it is placed well and have user-readable formats. Then only that application is said to be of highest Accessibility.
